Multi-head Systems
What is a Multi-head system?
The major difference between a traditional split system and a multi-head split system is that a multi-head split system only has one outdoor unit.
‘Multi-head’ refers to the multiple indoor units that run throughout the home from a single outdoor unit. The benefit of a multi-head system is the ability to set different rooms at different temperatures, and the ability to turn specific rooms off completely, meaning a reduction in electricity bills.
The system works by having the fan coil removing warm air from inside and recirculating cool air back. To heat, the system works in reverse allowing for the heat pump to run in reverse to provide heat on cold days.
This system is perfect for smaller spaces where there isn’t enough room for a traditional split system of having one outdoor unit for each individual indoor unit.
Up to 9 indoor units can be installed to the one outdoor unit. We can talk you through your options.
1. Why choose this system?
This system is a great choice when there is limited room for multiple outdoor units. It is a relatively simple system to install and can be incorporated into your renovation or building project.
Not only that, but a big reason that this system is popular is the fact that the indoor units don’t have to be wall mounted. There is a range of indoor units to suit your budget and space.

2. What are the running costs?
It doesn’t take much to reduce your running costs. Depending on the model you purchase, and it’s respective star rating will determine how much you can save annually. However looking beyond the initial cost to how you use your Multi-Head Split System can help as well.

*Data is based on: 2016 Victoria Energy Tariff of 32.1 c/kWh, using a Mitsubishi Electric Single Small Sized Room 2.5KW Split System collected from Sustainability Victoria’s Energy Consumption and Running Costs website. Usage times were set on average to 4 months of heating, and 2 months of cooling based on 7 hours a day. Actual running costs are affected by many factors including climate and insulation; this data should only be used as a guide and does not guarantee your individual running costs will reflect these results.
Tips For Using A Multi-Head Split System
Best Tip! Set the thermostat between 24C and 26C for cooling. Every degree lower in summer
will increase the running costs by around 10%.
- Use the economy setting if your multi-head split system has one and regularly service your air conditioner.
- Keep the sun’s heat out by closing curtains and external blinds during the day. Close windows and doors to areas being cooled when the split system is running.
- When the multi-head system is switched off and its cooler outside, open doors and windows to let the cool air in.
- Insulate your home to keep the heat out in summer and in during winter.
- Dress to suit the weather conditions.
