Split Systems

What is a split system?

A split system is most commonly used in houses and apartments as smaller spaces can sometimes only accommodate one wall-mounted indoor unit which is attached to one outdoor unit. The most commonly recognised split systems are wall-mounted units with fan coolers (known as evaporators).

1. How does it work?

How Do Split Systems Work?

Basically, a split system takes the warm air from inside your home and pumps it outside, resulting in cool air being redistributed inside. Reverse cycle works in reverse, providing warm air on cooler days.

Split systems get their name as half their system being outside (condenser), while the other half is installed inside (fan coil).

Different to a multi-head system, a split system can only have one internal system connected to one outdoor system.

How a Split System works when cooling / heating your home:

2. What are the running costs?

What Are The Running Costs With Split Systems?

One of our recommended brands for Split Systems is Mitsubishi Electric. For a Mitsubishi Electric GE Series 2.5KW Split System, installed in a small room providing regular heating & cooling during the winter and summer periods, the annual running cost would be measured at $272.34.

Reducing Split System Running Costs

It doesn’t take much to reduce your running costs with a Split System. Depending on the model you purchase, and it’s respective star rating will determine how much you can save annually. However looking beyond the initial cost to how you use your Split System can help as well.

3. Why choose this system?

Split systems are the most commonly used air conditioning system used in residential settings. They are affordable and easy to maintain.

The inverter technology used in split systems which maintains a constant temperature uses less energy and less noise therefore reducing energy costs.

For small or single rooms, the affordability of this option is best given that there is no installation of ducts required. Additionally, the actual system is also reasonably affordable.

The ability to adjust the temperature in different rooms is beneficial when air filtering and humidity in different rooms is required.

We can help you decide on which system is best for you and your home. Contact City to Coast air on 0400 001 465 to get in contact.

*Data is based on: 2016 Victoria Energy Tariff of 32.1 c/kWh, using a Mitsubishi Electric Single Small Sized Room 2.5KW Split System collected from Sustainability Victoria’s Energy Consumption and Running Costs website. Usage times were set on average to 4 months of heating, and 2 months of cooling based on 7 hours a day. Actual running costs are affected by many factors including climate and insulation; this data should only be used as a guide and does not guarantee your individual running costs will reflect these results.

Tips For Using A Split System

Best Tip! Set the thermostat between 24C and 26C for cooling. Every degree lower in summer will increase the running costs by around 10%.

  • Use the economy setting if your split system has one and regularly service your air conditioner.
  • Keep the sun’s heat out by closing curtains and external blinds during the day. Close windows and doors to areas being cooled when the split system is running.
  • When the split system is switched off and its cooler outside, open doors and windows to let the cool air in.
  • Insulate your home to keep the heat out in summer and in during winter.
  • Dress to suit the weather conditions.

We read the reviews on City to Coast and felt confident that they would be a good choice. Turned out that Leigh's father had installed our previous Airconditioner and we felt this was an even better recommendation given our previous experience was so positive. Leigh was prompt in quoting, fitting us in around his busy schedule and did a fantastic job, with a good quote and professional service. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for a solution to the very cold weather we are having already even before Winter starts.
